Susan O’Brien is Chaosium’s board games line editor, and based in Melbourne, Australia. In 2016 Susan worked with two of the world’s most renowned designers, Greg Stafford and Reiner Knizia, to produce the critically-acclaimed family game Khan of Khans, winner of two 2018 Gold ENnies. Susan’s latest board game Miskatonic University: The Restricted Collection brings design legend Reiner Knizia back with Western Australia-based graphic artist Ian O’Toole for Chaosium’s first Lovecraftian board game since 1987. Susan’s other current projects include The Red Thread of Fate, a cooperative RPG-board game hybrid involving 10th century Japanese love poetry, lost lovers, and kitsune (mythic shape-shifters); and a new edition of Credo, the “game of dueling dogmas”, a card game simulation of the Council of Nicaea.
Susan’s professional background is in editing, publishing, and project management. Her career has also included coordinating clinical research trials across the world, working as a jillaroo on a sheep station in the Australian Outback, avoiding being kidnapped in the Philippines, and serving as the ghost writer for various Arabian dignitaries. After a decade living and working overseas, Susan returned to Melbourne, Australia several years ago, where she lives with her husband (Chaosium’s MOB) and their two teenage sons.
Susan is speaking on the panel “Designing and Publishing a New Game”
